Vaalbara was a supercontinent, possibly the first in the history of the Earth. It arose in a world dominated by oceans and small volcanic Island chains, a punishing world of low oxygen, crushing pressure, and intense heat. But even in this hostile early world, life was beginning. Stromatolites, layered mounds of rock deposited by cyanobacteria, lined many of Earth's rocky coasts and were just beginning to create the oxygen-rich atmosphere we know today.

Ur joined with the continents Nena and Atlantica about 1 billion years ago to form the supercontinent Rodinia. Ur had survived as a single unit, until it was separated when the supercontinent Pangaea broke apart into Laurasia and Gondwana. Vaalbara is understood to have been a complete supercontinent by 3.1 billion years ago. Vaalbara possibly formed beginning 3.6 billion years ago and was broken apart by about 2.8 billion years ago. Vaalbara consisted of the eastern South African Kaapvaal craton joined with the Pilbara craton in northwest Western Australia. The first model theorizes that at least two separate supercontinents existed comprising Vaalbara (from ~3636 to 2803 Ma) and Kenorland (from ~2720 to 2450 Ma ).
